Event Debrief - Kranti’13

I’m so very excited to share my experience on the mini-hackathon style programme that I and Naresh had managed to conduct at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, Chennai. The event scale was pretty small – a college symposium that had called for app developers and enthusiasts around Chennai to participate, hack on something that they found entertaining. There was no restriction as such on what they need to work on. Rules were like, “You either make a Firefox add-on, else try to create a Firefox OS mobile app or forget everything…! If you come up with ‘something-Mozilla-development’, we’re as much pleased to support you in your initiative. So please, come hack, share and teach us!” (Listen! This wasn’t the official statement that they had put out on their website. Just for your understanding sake. Well, obvious! Of course they wouldn’t put it up. Isn’t it? :-P)

We didn’t do mass campaigning and promotions for it.  We had sent out an email though, via Community India mailing list. Surprisingly enough, there was this guy Keshav, who had come to the event via mailing list referral. I had never seen such a thing happen before and for the first time, I was happy that people are starting to take mailing lists seriously.

Software Freedom Day 2012 - Mozilla Report

Software Freedom Day” is a worldwide celebration to create awareness on GNU/Linux and other various Free Open Source Software to the public.

Indian Linux Users Group – Chennai [ http://ilugc.in ] and Free Software Foundation TamilNadu [ http://fsftn.org ] organised Software Freedom Day on September 15, 2012 in collaboration with Department of Computer Science, DG vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, Chennai at SRG auditorium, in the college premises.

I (Karthik) represented Mozilla Org. in this SFD 2012 event by putting up the Mozilla stall and explained to the visitors more about Mozilla and its products. It was very great since this was my first event where I have interacted with the public representing Mozilla INDIA. Moreover,

Around 1200 students from various colleges visited the stalls. Faculties from other departments of DG vaishnav College and faculties from colleges like Anna adharsh, SDNB Vaishnav College, Chrompet visited the stalls.

30 stalls on various topics including (My stall about Mozilla) were there...

Stalls :

Hey all,

Mozilla has long been striving hard to take its message and mission to people all across the India and we finally have people noticing us. Thanks to all :) And we've got a great bunch of blokes down south - ReMos, StudentReps, SuMos - who really made and are making things happen.

But sadly, there hasn't been any meetup of sorts lately and yes, we're finally having one this weekend. Joining us for the meetup will be our very own Vineel - Community lead of Mozilla India. Creating Addons, Hands-on, the fun way ! at Chennai Workshop

What makes Firefox the best browser ? Open Source ? nah ! HTML 5 ? No… you gotta be better than that. Look, I’m an average user just wanting to have the best browsing experience. I don’t really care if you got HTML 5 or 4 or 6 in it.  Well, Its not just me. Its about how Firefox has maintained a significant user base. Obviously, it all comes down to the greatest collection of Addons that the browser has got !

We’ve all enjoyed using addons with Firefox. It’s even more fun to develop one right ? We just wanted to share it to a greater crowd there and thus happened the Add On Development Workshop at Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai on 25th March 2012 as a part of their annual Software fest Carte Blanche

The speaker for the event was Soumya Deb a.k.a Debloper. He got along really well with the audience and was very interactive. Assisting him were Dwaraka – (myself), Harvish and Naresh.
